If any of y’all are seriously “outraged” over the whole “Alan Scott is gay” thing, please stop reading comics. Seriously. Find another hobby. The “why does it have to be an established character” whine is, no matter how you dress it up, symptomatic of your bigotry. So, let’s do some bullet-points, shall we?
1) First of all, this is not “the Golden Age Green Lantern.” As we’ve seen from the first issue of Earth-2, this Earth-2 has more in common with something like Marvel’s Ultimate universe than it does with anything resembling the golden age JSA. Therefore…
2) Your precious, heterosexual Alan Scott is still out there in the multiverse somewhere, and you have nearly 75 years worth of stories featuring him and his heterosexual self that you can return to any time you wish.
3) Even if this WAS the same Alan Scott, what of it? Adults come out of the closet all of the time. Yes, even after they’ve been married and had children. All of you dolts who constantly complain about how much you need “realism” in your stories about insanely powerful people who can fly and beat each other up should be positively thrilled about this entire affair.
4) Why must it be an established character? Because gay male characters are a much tougher sell to the predominantly male and sexually inexperienced comic-buying market. Kate Kane’s lipstick lesbianism and busty, leather-wearing alter ego have a built in fap-factor for young men, whereas a gay male character doesn’t. It’s hard enough for the big two to sell ANY new characters to our increasingly insular audience, let alone homosexual ones.
The ONLY reason I wish this weren’t true is because I hate it when a certain rumor-mongering/troll-enabling website is right about ANYTHING. I’d love for Wednesday to arrive and the iconic gay male to be Wally West or Ted Kord or Clark or Bruce or anyone else, just to prove them wrong. If you really think that a fictional character’s sexuality (sexuality which is rarely addressed in comics in the first place) fundamentally changes any of the things that once made that character awesome to you, then, I’m terribly sorry, but you have a serious problem. Last I checked, the things that made Alan Scott cool were the crazy magic ring, the domino mask, and the fact that he doesn’t have to answer to little blue leprechauns all the time.
Oh yeah, and the outrage coming from the sector of fandom who, by their own admission, don’t even read the book in question is especially suspect. You’re making us all look bad. Please stop.
